Daily Kitchen Note
Baked goods can be high in fat and calories. Substituting unsweetened applesauce for up to half the fat in a recipe reduces calories while keeping the final product moist and tender.

How to Replace fat with applesauce
- \n
- Identify the amount of fat (butter, oil, or shortening) called for in your baking recipe. \n
- Replace up to half of that fat with an equal amount of unsweetened applesauce. \n
- Mix the applesauce with the wet ingredients and proceed with the recipe as directed. \n
Why it works
Applesauce contains pectin, which helps retain moisture and provides structure in baked goods. This allows it to mimic the role of fat in keeping cakes and muffins tender, without adding the extra calories and saturated fat found in butter or oil.
